Review

You know how people always say the sequel is the first?, well this isn’t one of those times. I would just like to say that as always these are only the opinions of one person. I would like to firstly congratulate Veronica Roth. Reading the story proves that you can create the idea of standalone within a series. To all intents and purposes if you were unaware of the divergent series as a whole it could easily be said that insurgent is a standalone story, yes it follows characters we who have read divergent already know but I believe they are so well developed that you could get to know them as easily if this were your first encounter with them. If you have however read divergent then it also continues the overall plot perfectly. Insurgent is an action packed, adrenaline fuelled adventure that can satisfy anyone’s needs for a bit of written excitement. With the added enjoyment of having the audiobooks at your disposal, this series really can come to life for the reader. Insurgent actually introduced me to the audiobooks, so I then went back, once I had completed the entire series to complete it again using the audiobooks. The relationships are solidified and explored in a deeper sense as we carry through the plot. Most of all I think we learn the most about Tris, as she discovers more about herself we as the reader do as well. The extent of her divergency is explained and actually all that that means, she has an extraordinary task ahead of her in attempt to open the message from the founders of the factions, but we as readers, nor Tris really understand what it will entail and what it’s true result will be or mean for their society. The expectation of both sides of the opposing point of view of what the message may contain reinforces the idea that one a persons beliefs really can alter perspective for good and flawed reasons. Tris and Janine believe two very different things about the contents of the box and the instructions it will contain, but even upon hearing the message Janine chooses to bend its meaning to her own will and actions, which in turn sets Tris and Four on the only path possible to fulfil the instructions and stop Janine. The point at which is chosen to end the book is cleverly picked to ensure the reader picks up the next book to complete the story but those faithful to the readership of the series will as I was be eager to find out what will happen.

**Disclaimer** I in no way wish to alter or sway anyone else’s view by anything discussed in this post. these are merely my own opinion feel free to agree or disagree as you see fit.
